Why Do Dogs Eat Grass

We've all seen them do it, but I'd be willing to bet that none of us really understands why. Some dogs will eat just about anything, and eating grass may just come down to that. I know a Beagle who acts like she's starving all the time, even after just polishing off a big nutritious meal. That dog is such a glutton, she'll eat anything and everything you give her, and she'll eat it anytime. She eats dog food of course, but she's also been seen eating veggies, fruits and berries. She eats lizards she catches, and yes, she eats grass, too.

Many dogs love to eat grass. Most experts say not to worry, because eating grass won't really harm a dog. Why they do it is an open question, but here are some thoughts on the subject.

  1. Everyone thinks of dogs as natural-born meat-eaters, but dogs in the wild are actually scavengers who eat many types of food to meet their nutritional needs. Eating grass as an alternative food just comes naturally.
  2. Dogs with upset stomachs often eat grass. Eating grass tickles the dog's throat, often causing it to vomit. It's just a dog's way to get rid of a stomach problem.
  3. Some dogs may need nutrients that grass and other plants provide. A dog might need some extra roughage or its diet might be missing some type of essential vitamin or mineral. The dog will find a source for what's missing and then eat it, even if it's just ordinary lawn grass.

Whatever the reason, dogs eating grass is nothing to worry about unless the grass has been treated with toxic chemicals or you many want to think about growning some grass that is healthy for dogs at cat to eat such as Dog & Cat Wheatgrass which is alot healthy then normal grass. Now if your dog begins to eat a excessive amount of grass make sure to contact you vet.
